1.
Built on the Rock the Church shall stand Even when steeples are falling. Crumbled have spires in ev'ry land; Bells still are chiming and calling, Calling the young and old to rest, But above all the soul distressed, Longing for rest everlasting Longing for rest everlasting Surely in temples made with hands God, the Most High, is not dwelling; High above earth His temple stands, All earthly temples excelling. Yet He who dwells in heav'n above Chooses to live with us in love, Making our bodies His temple. Making our bodies His temple. We are God's house of living stones, Built for His own habitation. He through baptismal grace us owns Heirs of His wondrous salvation. Were we but two His name to tell, Yet He would deign with us to dwell, With all His grace and His favor. With all His grace and His favor. Here stands the font before our eyes, Telling how God has received us; Th'altar recalls Christ's sacrifice And what His Supper here gives us. Here sound the Scriptures that proclaim Christ yesterday, today, the same, And evermore, our Redeemer. And evermore, our Redeemer.

VERSE 1 The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the Word. From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. VERSE 2 Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth; her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. CHORUS Our Cornerstone the Author of our faith Restore our souls Lead us in Your ways Strengthen tired hands To join Your work again ’til the hope of Christ is alive in every land. VERSE 3 Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore, till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest VERSE 4 Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we like them, the meek and lowly, may live eternally.
3.
By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered and confidently waiting, come what may, we know that God is with us night and morning, and never fails to meet us each new day. Yet are our hearts by their old foe tormented; still evil days bring burdens hard to bear; O give our frightened souls the sure salvation for which, O Lord, you taught us to prepare. And when the cup you give is filled to brimming with bitter suffering, hard to understand, we take it gladly, trusting though with trembling, out of so good and so beloved a hand. If once again, in this mixed world, you give us the joy we had, the brightness of your sun, we shall recall what we have learned through sorrow, and dedicate our lives to you alone.

about

Here are three old hymns, recorded in part because I think they have something important to say to the church in this moment, and in part because I've been learning to play the pedal steel and I've always wanted to hear some of these songs given a pseudo-country treatment.

These are really demo recordings; they were hastily recorded in my bedroom/work-from-home office, and I'm playing instruments that aren't really my forte. I'd like to play these songs with an actual band someday, maybe as part of a larger project, but I thought they sounded good enough for the internet as they are. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this little pandemic project.

credits

released August 7, 2020

Credits: I sang and played all the instruments and did the recording/mixing. Natanya also sang. The lyrics come from the original hymn writers, with the exception of my additional chorus in "The Church's One Foundation." The arrangements are my own adaptations of classic hymn tunes, except for "Built on the Rock," which I adapted from an original tune written by Christian Thomas for the same hymn (thanks, Christian!).
